Reigniting Purpose: How 55+ Participants Used Forum Theatre to Redefine Ageing

We recently wrapped up an extraordinary workshop as part of our Reignite project—an initiative proudly funded by Erasmus+. We invited a vibrant group of participants aged 55 and over to explore deeply personal yet universal themes: ageing, purpose, and mindful connections.

For everyone in the room, it was their very first time using theatre to tackle these topics. By the end of the day, they hadn’t just participated in a workshop—they had created a blueprint for the future.

Why Theatre for Challenging Topics?

When talking about ageing or losing a sense of purpose, conversations can sometimes feel heavy or uncomfortable. Theatre changes the game by providing a safe space to explore vulnerable topics without feeling exposed. By stepping into a scenario, participants can:

  • Foster deep empathy by seeing challenges from new perspectives.
  • Bypass rigid thinking and unlock creative, embodied problem-solving.
  • Build mindful, authentic connections through the power of play.

The Power of Forum Theatre

To drive this home, we used Forum Theatre—a powerful methodology where the audience becomes “spect-actors.”

How it works: A short scene is performed depicting a familiar struggle related to ageing, which ends in frustration. The audience is then invited to stop the action, step onto the stage, and try different tactics to change the outcome. It turns the theatre into a living laboratory for real-world change.

A Blueprint for the Future

The energy in the room was electric, and our participants absolutely loved it! Because it was their first time using drama to explore these themes, there was a beautiful sense of discovery.

They didn’t just witness stories; they rewrote them. Participants walked away not only with wonderful memories, but with a tangible blueprint—a shared framework of communication tools and insights to help them age with purpose and stay mindfully connected.

A massive thank you to Erasmus+ for the funding, and to our incredible participants for their courage and wisdom. Stay tuned for the next steps of the Reignite journey!
